A cadet training to become a deputy with the Santa Clara (CA) Sheriff's Office collapsed during training on Tuesday and later died at a nearby hospital.
According to the San Jose Mercury-News, the sheriff's office confirmed that the cadet—whose name has not yet been officially released—was participating in defensive tactics training when he suffered a sudden medical emergency.
Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Jessica Gabaldon said in a written statement, "It is with great sadness we report the unexpected passing of one of our recruits."
The cadet is said to have been in his late 30s, according to multiple reports.
No further details have been released
An investigation is now ongoing.
