Scott Israel, the former Broward County, FL, sheriff who was suspended over his agency's response to the Parkland school shooting, filed paperwork Monday formally signaling his intention to run in the Democratic primary for sheriff in 2020.

In January, Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended Israel, citing problems with the Sheriff’s Office response to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre, in which 17 people were killed and 17 injured on Feb. 14, 2018.

In January, Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended Israel, citing problems with the Sheriff’s Office response to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre, in which 17 people were killed and 17 injured on Feb. 14, 2018.
Israel is fighting that suspension before the Florida Senate. A Senate special master is considering the case, and the full Senate could vote on Israel’s fate in September.
Gregory Tony, the replacement appointed by DeSantis, has become a Democrat and has indicated he intends to run. Multiple other Democrats are expected to run.
