SC Officer Dies After Medical Emergency in Training
Master Police Officer Tyrell Owens Riley became ill during the physical fitness training portion of the assessment and was transported by EMS to Providence Hospital, where he suffered cardiac arrest and could not be revived.

A Columbia, SC, police officer died Saturday after suffering a medical emergency while participating in a Specialized Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) assessment.
Master Police Officer Tyrell Owens Riley became ill during the physical fitness training portion of the assessment and was transported by EMS to Providence Hospital, where he suffered cardiac arrest and could not be revived.
According to an announcement by the Columbia Police Department, Riley had been with the department seven-and-a-half years and was most recently assigned as a patrol officer in Metro Region.
Riley, a Columbia native, served with distinction with the United States Marine Corps before joining the police department.
