NYPD Memo: Indians Are Asian

New York City police officers received a lesson in demography Monday in the form of a memo clarifying the difference between Native Americans and Asian Indians.

Commissioner Ray Kelly told NYPD officers that "incorrect racial identification impacts the department's data collection" in the memo.

Apparently in a modest number of reports, crime victims were alternatively described as Asian and American Indian. The mistake was discovered by the Quality Assurance Division, reports the New York Daily News .
