Following the death of a detective from COVID-19 over the weekend, the NYPD is implementing a new policy to protect officers who have pre-existing conditions or are pregnant.
Detective Cedric Dixon died at a Bronx hospital from coronavirus complications Saturday morning, the detectives' union said. Dixon is the first uniformed member of the department to succumb to a disease that has killed hundreds locally.
More than 600 officers have COVID-19, in addition to dozens of civilian employees. The number of sick calls is now more than 4,000 daily, nearly quadruple the department's daily average, NBC reports.
