NYPD Chiefs Ride Subway to Talk to Riders About Crime
"I know that you guys are doing the best you can, but honestly, I didn't feel safe," said one Bronx resident, Jonilee Maldonado.
All NYPD chiefs were out riding the rails last Thursday in a sweeping initiative to hear concerns about subway safety directly from riders.
Every subway line had multiple ranking NYPD chiefs riding during the day, in an initiative dubbed "Chiefs on the Train," WABC reports.
The top department executives talked to riders to hear their concerns.
"I know that you guys are doing the best you can, but honestly, I didn't feel safe," said one Bronx resident, Jonilee Maldonado.
The Gothamist reported Monday March 25 that the NYPD is deploying 800 officers to subway stations to crack down on fare evasion.
Police officials have responded to a string of recent subway shootings by pointing to fare evaders — claiming the man who was shot in the recent Hoyt-Schermerhorn shooting brought a gun in through the emergency exit at Nostrand Avenue. Cracking down on fare evasion helps keep “bad people” out of the system, NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Tarik Sheppard said on Monday.
