Members of the New York City Police Benevolent Association voted "no confidence" in Commissioner James O'Neill and Mayor Bill de Blasio on Wednesday.
According to NBC News, Patrick Lynch—the longtime president of the PBA—said in a statement that "for years, Commissioner O'Neill has cravenly acquiesced to the mayor and his anti-cop allies."
The vote comes following the firing of Daniel Pantaleo last week, and the PBA president's statement that officers should "proceed with the utmost caution in this new reality, in which they may be deemed 'reckless' just for doing their job."
In the week following those comments, arrests in New York plummeted—with busts dropping 27% between August 19—the day Pantaleo was fired—and August 25 compared to the same period in 2018, with police making 3,508 busts compared to 4,827.
