Hung Jury In NYPD Cop's Rape Trial

A day after a New York City police officer was convicted of sexually attacking a woman at gunpoint last August, a judge declared a mistrial on Wednesday on the remaining two counts of rape and related charges that had left the jury deadlocked, reports the New York Times .

Despite the jury’s impasse, the officer, Michael Pena, faces a possible sentence of life in prison after being found guilty on Tuesday of criminal sexual assault and predatory sexual assault.

The 25-year-old victim broke down in tears as the jury announced that it could not reach a verdict on the rape charges. She was escorted through a side door of the courtroom by supporters and members of the Manhattan district attorney’s office.
