Grand Jury Finds Portland Officer Acted Lawfully in Fatally Shooting Carjacking Suspect

A grand jury has found a Portland, OR, police officer acted lawfully in fatally shooting an armed carjacking suspect on Interstate 5 late last year.

Multnomah County prosecutors announced Thursday the grand jury’s finding of a “not true bill” — a legal term stating an act was lawful — in the fatal Dec. 6 police shooting of Brandon L. Keck, Oregon Live reports.

A spokesperson said District Attorney Mike Schmidt would request that a transcript of the grand jury proceedings be made public, as is typical in Multnomah County after the process concludes.

Officer John Hughes fired shots into the driver’s side window of an SUV moving at a crawl on Interstate 5 in North Portland, killing Keck, according to a bystander video.

Police said the shooting ended a crime spree that began with a home invasion and included “multiple carjackings” and hit-and-runs in North and Northeast Portland earlier that day, according to an incident report filed with the Oregon Department of Justice .
