An Army psychologist facing deployment overseas opened fire at the Fort Hood Army base on Thursday, setting off on a rampage that killed 13 people and left 30 wounded.
The shooting began around 1:30 p.m., when shots were fired at the base's Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening, said Lt. Gen. Bob Cone at Fort Hood.
The shooter has been identified as Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who has been identified as a Muslim . Hasan is now hospitalized and is in stable condition. He reportedly exchanged fire with a civilian police woman, who also survived.
Prior to firing on the soldiers, Hasan reportedly yelled "Allahu Akbar," which is Arabic for "God Is Great."
