The Obama Administration awarded Detroit a $1.8 million grant Friday to hire 10 police officers to help the city fight crime, reports the Detroit Free-Press.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder announced the grant, which will come from the COPS grants awarded by the Department of Justice. The grant pays for a Detroit Police Department officer's salary and benefits for three years.
Holder also announced that Flint, Mich., will receive a similar grant of $1.1 million for six officers. The city was named the county's most violent on a per capita basis in FBI statistics released earlier this month. Other Detroit-area cities to recieve funds include Harper Woods, River Rouge, and Waterfort Township.
