Family of Stephon Clark Files $20M Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against Police

The family of Stephon Clark —who was fatally shot by officers with the Sacramento Police Department in March 2018—has filed a $20 million federal lawsuit, claiming officers racially profiled the victim.

The suit filed on behalf of Clark's two children, his parents, and grandparents, contends that the officers—who were at the time responding to calls that a man was breaking into vehicles in the neighborhood—violated the man’s constitutional rights

According to USA Today , lawyers for the family say that the actions of Officers Terrence Mercadal and Jared Robinet was "willful, wanton, malicious, and done with reckless disregard for the rights and safety" of Clark.

District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert has not yet released findings on whether Officers Robinet and Mercadal were justified in using deadly force in the incident.
