The Los Angeles City Council has confirmed Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's pick of Charlie Beck to take the nation's third largest police force, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Beck, a deputy chief who was chosen as chief earlier this month, takes over a department that made great strides under William Bratton reducing crime and rehabilitating itself from the Rampart scandal.
Today is Beck's first day on the job as the new chief. He has said he will concentrate on rank-and-file officers and retaining goodwill established bwtween the police and minority communities.
