On Wednesday, the Missouri State Senate Fiscal Oversight Committee voted to pass SCS HCS#2 HB 495 by a vote of 5-2, pushing the bill toward a vote by the full Missouri Senate.
The Missouri Senate held an executive session Wednesday and voted on a bill to move the oversight of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police to State instead of local control.
On Wednesday, the Missouri State Senate Fiscal Oversight Committee voted to pass SCS HCS#2 HB 495 by a vote of 5-2, pushing the bill toward a vote by the full Missouri Senate.
The bill went to the Senate floor Wednesday afternoon, where those opposing the bill talked for hours, FirstAlert4 reports.
The House passed the bill initially in February by a vote of 106-47.
If passed by the Senate, the bill will move back to the House or a conference committee to address added amendments.
If the bill (House Bill 495) is signed into law, the Board of Police Commissioners would consist of four local citizen commissioners and the Mayor of St. Louis. The board would provide direct authority over the police department and be effective on Aug. 28, 2025.
