Accidental 911 Calls Drain Police Resources In NYC

New York's emergency call takers field nearly 4 million accidental 911 calls a year, including many that are referred to as "butt calls."

The accidental calls made up 38% of the 10.4 million emergency calls in 2010, according to the Daily News . That year police were dispatched to 3.4 million calls.

The accidental calls also included false alarm "short calls" of 19 seconds or less for an average of 10,700 false calls a day.
