Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone is resigning and the county board will pick an interim successor.

Penzone announced that he planned to resign in October and submitted his letter in December.
He is planning to accept a non-law enforcement position.
In a Dec. 15 interview with Arizona Family , Penzone talked about his achievements in office, but expressed great frustration at working with the federal consent decree monitor. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office has been under a consent decree since 2011.
Penzone is a Democrat, so per state statute, the supervisors must appoint a Democrat, even though the board is majority Republican, AZ Central reports.
Applicants must submit a cover letter and resume to the clerk of the Board of Supervisors by Jan. 19 at 5 p.m.
Applicants are subject to a background check, and the documents they submit will become public records.
