Oakland Police Veteran Sworn in as City's New Chief

Deputy Chief LaRonne Armstrong was sworn in as Oakland's Police Chief Monday morning. Mayor Libby Schaaf administered his oath outside in the courtyard of McClymonds High School, Armstrong's alma mater.

Armstrong is a 22-year-veteran of the police department, ABC7 reports.

He replaces interim chief Susan Manheimer, who came over from San Mateo's police department in March and whose contract as interim chief just expired.

Armstrong will face rising crime in Oakland , deep budget cuts, and the city government's plan for re-imagining police services.

The city has had 13 police chiefs since 1993.
