D.C. police have fired an officer after he and others were accused of racing two marked cruisers on a street in Northeast Washington last month, ending in a crash, authorities said Monday.
Three other officers — one driver and two passengers — remain under investigation, the Washington Post reports.
Acting police chief Robert J. Contee III, speaking at a news conference, called the incident “embarrassing,” adding, “It’s certainly something that I do not tolerate.”
Contee said the terminated officer had recently been hired and was still on probation, meaning he can be fired at will. The chief said the D.C. Office of the Attorney General is working to determine if criminal charges should be filed.
For police and transportation departments, traditional parking enforcement exposes officers to risk, such as standing on busy roads to issue paper tickets or catching offenders in dangerous, congested areas. Modern technology changes this, reducing exposure, speeding processes, and limiting confrontations.
