Suspect in California Cop Shooting Killed in Fierce Gun Battle on 91 Freeway

Anaheim police Sgt. Tim Schmidt said the fatal gunfight took place shortly after midnight as officers attempted to pull over the suspect as he fled east on the 91 Freeway. The man ran into traffic near Brookhurst Street, hitting other vehicles and disabling his own car, Schmidt said. The suspect then exited his vehicle, armed with a handgun, Schmidt said. Taking cover behind other cars, the suspect exchanged gunfire with at least two officers and was shot, Schmidt said.

N.C. State Trooper Shot to Death Near Canton

A North Carolina state Highway Patrol trooper was shot and killed Tuesday night during a traffic stop on Interstate 40 near here, authorities said. Lt. Everett Clendenin, public information officer for the patrol, said in a news release that the trooper had stopped a vehicle in the eastbound lanes of I-40 near exit 31 at around 10:20 p.m.

Georgia Deputy Killed Day Laborer After Attack on Wife

The DeKalb County, Ga., sheriff's deputy who told police he was forced to shoot an intruder who attacked his wife had brought the man into his home as a laborer, newly released records show. The shoot out - described by Derrick Yancey as the laborer shooting his wife, Linda, and Yancey shooting the laborer - erupted when the man tried to rob the couple, according to DeKalb police records.
