Shots Fired, Skokie, Ill., Crime Scene

Skokie (Ill.) Police Officer Tim Gramins pursuit of bank robbery suspect Raymond Maddox was going well until Maddox headed into a residential neighborhood and slammed on the brakes. Gramins was drawn into a deadly daylight gunfight with neighbors looking on. Maddox lacerated the officer's cruiser with a barrage of 9mm and .380 rounds until Gramins ended the fight. The 5.11 Tactical Sabre 2.0 jacket features the QUIXIP side access system for fast sidearm access. Radio mic pass-through openings from the hand warmer pockets to the inside of the jacket and three pullout ID panels allow you to remain covert. The softshell outer shell is waterproof yet breathable and features waterproof zippers on the front and arms. NLEOMF's Officers of the Month

The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) has honored some of the nation's bravest and most dedicated officers through its Officer of the Month program. Officers of the month are nominated by their supervisors, and then the nominees are reviewed by the NLEOMF staff. Nominations that make the cut receive consideration from a select committee of NLEOMF board members. Last year POLICE Magazine became official media sponsor for the Officer of the Month program. K-9 History: Riverside (Calif.) PD

Riverside (Calif.) Police Officer Loren Mitchell became the first officer in his agency to work with a police dog when he was partnered up with "PAL" in 1958. Chief Sergio Diaz and the City Council honored the now-retired Officer Mitchell for this historical achievement at a City Hall ceremony. The photo gallery includes an apprehension the pair made during a 1950s traffic stop.
