An off-duty Chicago police officer exchanged gunfire, wounding one suspect, during an attempted carjacking Thursday evening.

The officer was getting something out of her Tesla around 6 p.m. when another car pulled up with at least three armed men inside.

One of the carjackers jumped out and pointed a gun at her. But he did not realize that he was attempting to rob an off-duty police officer who was armed.

The officer drew her weapon and a rapid exchange of gunfire filled the block, reports CBS Chicago. A total of 13 to 14 shots were fired.

The officer was not injured, but shots shattered the rear side window of her Tesla.

At least one of her shots hit the attempted carjacker and he ran from the scene. Later, a man with a gunshot wound was dropped off at an area hospital.

He is now a person of interest in the case.
