A Memphis police officer is in critical but stable condition after being shot Saturday as officers were taking a man into custody following the report of a stolen car. A fellow officer applied a tourniquet to the wounded officer until paramedics arrived.

The Memphis Police Department received a call about a stolen car and police allege 34-year-old Giorgio Minnis had stolen a car belonging to his aunt, reports FOX13.

Police say Minnis was reportedly armed and took the car to another family member's residence. Officers also received a call reporting the suspect had fired a shot and was making threats to do harm to those inside the residence, according to the Memphis Police Department

Officers arrived on the scene and attempted to take Minnis into custody when he retrieved a handgun from his waistband and shot one of the officers. He was disarmed and was taken into custody without injury.

The injured officer was transported to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.  He was later upgraded to a critical but stable condition, police say.
