A Burton, MI, police officer and Genesee County sheriff deputy are in critical condition after a shooting in Burton on Tuesday afternoon.

The suspect was killed, ABC12 reports.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said the officer and deputy responded to the area of Saginaw Street and Bristol Road to investigate reports of gunshots.

Police received a description of the male suspect while they were responding. The officer and deputy saw a suspect matching that description when they arrived and started chasing him on foot.

The suspect tried to climb a fence during the chase and it collapsed, Leyton said. While the officer and deputy tried to pull the fence off the suspect, he allegedly opened fire on the police officers.

Leyton said the officer and deputy both returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times. He was pronounced dead of his injuries.
