An officer with the Oak Forest (IL) Police Department was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with an armed suspect early Sunday morning.

According to NBC News, officers had responded to a disturbance call involving a stolen vehicle early Sunday.

As police called for a tow-truck to remove the abandoned vehicle from the roadway, a subject nearby opened fire, striking one of the responding officers at the scene.

The officer then returned fire, striking the suspect.

Both were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. The condition of the officer—and the gunman—have not yet been released to media sources.
