A man was arrested after he reportedly threw a burning American flag onto a Boston Police Department squad car on Sunday night.

According to ABC News, approximately 1,000 flags were planted at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument over Memorial Day weekend by a group of volunteers who organized a "social distancing-compliant" version of the annual flag garden for solemn event.

The man—identified as 40-year-old Daniel Lucey—reportedly told police that he had tossed the flag onto the police vehicle as a "form or protest."

Lucey was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct, assault and battery on a police officer, malicious destruction of property and malicious destruction of historical documents.
