An officer with the Tonawanda (NY) Police Department was shot multiple times early Tuesday morning, but is expected to fully recover from his wounds.
According to NBC News, police say officers responded to reports of a "drive-by" shooting and as they arrived they encountered a male subject and asked to speak to him
The man—went into a dwelling and reemerged with a firearm and opened fire on the responding officers, police say.
One officer was struck twice in his protective body armor and twice in his backside.
The suspect then fled in a car and led responding officers on a brief vehicle pursuit, police say.
The officer—Detective David Ljiljanich, a 19-year veteran of the force—was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The suspected gunman—whose name has not yet been released yet—was taken into custody.
Charges are pending.
