Wife Charged with Murder in Death of Tennessee Police Officer

A woman has been charged with first-degree murder and possession of a handgun under the influence in connection with the death of her husband, Officer James "Chip" Smith of the Red Bank (TN) Police Department during a domestic dispute over the weekend.

According to WVLT-TV, police say they responded to a call of a domestic dispute and found the woman—identified as 37-year-old Melissa Smith—kneeling beside her husband who had suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A .380 handgun was recovered from the scene.
