An officer with the Florissant (MO) Police Department who was struck by a suspect attempting to flee arrest on Monday afternoon is reportedly "alert and conscious," the department said on social media.

The department said on Facebook that the officer—whose name has not been released—was attempting to arrest an unnamed suspect when the subject fled in a vehicle. After the officer was struck, another officer opened fire at the fleeing car.

"The suspect then exited his vehicle and attempted to flee the crash," the Facebook post said. "The suspect was apprehended and taken into custody. The suspect was NOT shot nor was the Florissant police officer."

The subject continued to drive a short distance before crashing.

The five-year veteran officer was transported to a nearby hospital.
