The wife of a former Rikers Island Corrections Officer who was so badly beaten by several inmates that he suffered a broken neck and spinal injuries has filed a Manhattan Supreme Court lawsuit seeking $1 million damages against the city and the Department of Corrections.

According to the New York Post, Officer Jean Souffrant was attacked by an alleged gang member named Steven Espinal and three other men in February 2018.

Espinal reportedly boasted prior to the attack that he intended to "knock out this super cop."

Souffrant's wife argues that leadership at Rikers Island should have known about the danger to her husband and taken measures to prevent the attack.
