An officer with the Providence (RI) Police Department who had been accused of involvement in a scheme to steal tires and rims from local vehicles has been found to have no involvement in the criminal activity.

According to the Providence Journal, Officer James Lewis was exonerated of any wrongdoing on Wednesday.

Public Safety Commissioner Steven M. Paré said in an interview with the newspaper, "At this point, it appears he is completely innocent of any wrongdoing whatsoever."

As of Wednesday night, Lewis had not yet been cleared to return to duty.
