The High Point, NC, police officer shot on Sunday night is now home recovering from his injuries, according to WXII-TV.
Police had been called to a Walmart store to deal with a man — identified as 26-year-old Tyler Carrico — trespassing inside the store who refused to leave.
According to police, when the officer began checking Carrico for warrants, he attempted to flee. The officer was able to take Carrico to the ground and radio for assistance.
When a backup officer arrived inside, police say Carrico grabbed for the initial responding officer's sidearm and during the ensuing struggle, a single shot was fired, striking the officer in the hand.
The injured officer continued to pursue Carrico and assisted other officers in taking the suspect into custody. The officer was then taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
