Illinois Deputy Shot, Suspect at Large

A Winnebago County (IL) Sheriff's Deputy is expected to be OK after authorities say he was shot during a traffic stop Saturday morning in Rockford, IL.

A Winnebago County (IL) Sheriff's Deputy is expected to be OK after authorities say he was shot during a traffic stop Saturday morning in Rockford, IL, reports KWQC.

The deputy had attempted to stop a fleeing vehicle when the suspect fled the vehicle and exited on foot. While fleeing, the suspect pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots at the deputy, striking him. The suspect then fled on foot into a heavily wooded area.

A massive manhunt then took place, utilizing K-9 units from the Sheriff's Department, Illinois State Police, and Rockford Police along with air support.

Police located suspected narcotics in the suspect's vehicle. Winnebago County detectives were able to identify the suspected shooter, obtain and execute a search warrant, and use the evidence they found to obtain an arrest warrant for the suspect, Jordan D. Spates of Rockford. Spates has a warrant for aggravated battery to a police officer with a firearm.
