The 47-year-old Brockton, Mass., pharmacy robber who led state and local officers on a high-speed pursuit Monday was shot and killed while running between two houses after crashing a black pickup truck, police said.

Jeffrey Watts, who witnesses described as having long hair and dirty clothes, robbed a CVS pharmacy at Centre and Cary streets for an unknown amount of opiates just before noon. Police caught up with his truck and pursued Watts through Brockton, Whitman and into East Bridgewater.

At some point a Massachusetts State Police detective assigned to the Plymouth County District Attorney's office joined the pursuit. Because the detective fired his weapon, the case has been assigned to the Cape and Islands District Attorney's office to avoid appearance of a conflict of interest, reports Enterprise News.
