Calif. Senators Call for Reinstatement of Assault Weapons Ban

California Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein hope to renew the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004.

California Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein hope to renew the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

In an interview with the Chronicle's Politics blogger, Feinstein said the rampage shooting in Aurora, Colo., should rekindle talk about the ban, which would likely be quashed by the National Rifle Association.

"Weapons of war do not belong on our streets, plain and simple," Feinstein told Carolyn Lochhead. "I am considering how I might strengthen the Assault Weapons Ban that expired in 2004 and how best to move forward with that bill."

Feinstein's weapons ban was signed by President Clinton in 1994 but expired in 2004 and has not been renewed.
