A Michigan State trooper died while entering the home of a man who had barricaded himself inside and shot at officers. The standoff ended when the building burned to the ground.
The 40-hour standoff began early Monday in Dayton Township, Mich., when officers tried to serve Scott Allen Woodring, 40, with a felony arrest warrant for criminal sexual conduct with a minor. He is accused of soliciting sex on July 1 at a gas station, reports The Grand Rapids Press.
Police say Woodring barricaded himself in his home and then fired two shots at the officers while they tried to negotiate with him. Monday afternoon, a state police entry team entered the home and Woodring allegedly shot at them. Trooper Kevin Marshall, 33, was shot while effecting the entry. He died later during surgery.
Tuesday, police fired a percussion round into the building, meaning to shock Woodring. Instead, the home burned to the ground. Officials were unsure if the explosive caused the fire or if the man inside set it.
Police helped Woodring’s wife escape several hours into the standoff, leaving him alone in the home. The man’s whereabouts are not known. Authorities say he could be in the basement.
