Crime in United States schools continued to decline from 1992 to 2002, coinciding with a national drop in the crime rate, according to a new DOJ report.
According to the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) and the Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) that conducted the study, school crime dropped from 48 violent victimizations per 1,000 students in 1992 to 24 per 1,000 in 2002.
In 2002, as in previous years, students were more likely to be victims of violence away from school than when at school.
