16 California SWAT Deputies Injured in Training Explosion

The sheriff’s department said on X that the SWAT team was jointly training with the department’s Hazardous Devices Section when the explosion occurred indoors.

Sixteen Orange County (California) Sheriff’s Department SWAT deputies were injured Wednesday in an explosion at an FBI training center in Irvine. All of the injuries were not life-threatening, officials say.

The sheriff’s department said on X that the SWAT team was jointly training with the department’s Hazardous Devices Section when the explosion occurred indoors.

One of the deputies suffered a leg injury that required surgery.

Most of the other injured deputies were transported to the hospital with noise injuries including ringing in their ears and dizziness.

The Orange County Register reported Thursday that 15 of the deputies have been released from the hospital.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department, in coordination with the FBI, is conducting an investigation.
