The Senate approved H.R. 2107, "The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Maintenance Fund Act," and now President Bush has signed the bill into law. Introduced by Congressman Jim Saxton (R-NJ), this legislation transfers $1.3 million from the National Park Service to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) for the maintenance of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
The funds were generated in the late 1990s by the Congressionally-authorized sale of a commemorative National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial coin. Through a series of unintentional oversights, this money was misplaced and NLEOMF has until now been unable to access the funds to make much-needed repairs to the Memorial. While NLEOMF has financed necessary maintenance over the last six years, future repair and maintenance costs related to the Memorial will be substantial.
