The funds were generated in the late 1990s by the Congressionally-authorized sale of a commemorative National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial coin. Through a series of unintentional oversights, this money was misplaced and NLEOMF has until now been unable to access the funds to make much-needed repairs to the Memorial. While NLEOMF has financed necessary maintenance over the last six years, future repair and maintenance costs related to the Memorial will be substantial.
This law would not have been possible without the strong efforts of the Memorial's ardent supporters on Capitol Hill: Please join us in thanking Congressman Jim Saxton for introducing the legislation and guiding it through the House, U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) for his tireless efforts to guide the bill through the Senate, U.S. Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM) for getting the bill approved by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and to Congressmen Jimmy Duncan (R-TN), Peter King (R-NY), Frank Wolf (R-VA) and Charles Bass (R-NH) for cosponsoring H.R. 2107.
