Officer Adams entered the police academy in July. He had served as a corrections officer for four years.

"Sherman's dedication as a New York City police officer began when he took the oath of office and started his training in the Police Academy," Commissioner Ray Kelly said in a statement. "He made a commitment to public service first as a correction officer and then as a police officer with a seriousness few are prepared to make so early in their careers."

Commissioner Kelly and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg visited with Officer Adams' mother on Monday evening.
