A New York school district suspended its resource officer (SRO) program Tuesday, after an officer's gun accidentally discharged in a high school hallway.
Officer Sean McCutcheon, a veteran police officer with more than two decades of experience, accidentally fired his gun at 1:38 p.m. at Highland High School. No one was injured during the incident when the gun went off, reports USA Today.
The Highland Central School District implemented the SRO program following the Newtown, Conn., mass shooting. During the planning stages, administrators decided to hire trained security personnel with law enforcement backgrounds. Officials also agreed to allow officers to carry their side arms inside buildings.
