A Massachusetts State Police sergeant has been relieved of duty, after he released stark images of the capture of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev in response to a Rolling Stone magazine cover.

Sgt. Sean Murphy, who is also an agency photographer, surrendered his gun, badge, police ID, and other gear Thursday evening to a sergeant and two lieutenants who arrived at his home. Murphy has not been fired and his status will be reviewed at a hearing next week, repots Boston Magazine.

Earlier Thursday, Murphy gave hundreds of photos from the end of the Boston Marathon bombing manhunt to Boston Magazine, including several images showing Tsarnaev emerging from a boat with a sniper's red dot on his forehead.

Murphy said he released the photos in response to Rolling Stone's cover showing Tsarnaev that the trooper said glamorizes a terrorist.
