The Dallas Police Department has the potential to make a small dent in its staffing shortfall with the graduation of as many as 65 police academy cadets, if everyone in the current class makes the cut.

The Dallas Police Department has the potential to make a small dent in its staffing shortfall with the graduation of as many as 65 police academy cadets, if everyone in the current class makes the cut.

According to CBS News, the agency is roughly 1,000 officers short of the city's need, so any increase in the ranks will be a welcome one.

The agency said it had advertised openings "from coast to coast" in an effort to attract new recruits, but more than three quarters of the recruits in this class are from Texas.

Starting pay for graduating officers will be $60,000 annually.
