The civil service authority in Aurora (CO) has changed its policy, making citizenship no longer a requirement to work for that city's police and fire departments.
According to CBS News, anyone with a green card who is here lawfully in the United States can apply for jobs with those departments.
Police Division Chief Harry Glidden—who oversees the police academy—says that now he can hire a variety of people who better reflect his community.
Every non-citizen applicant will go through an extensive background check, and must meet the department’s standards just like a person with citizenship does.
So far the police department has received applications from 21 green card holders.
