Proposed Illinois Legislation Would Require Bachelor Degrees for Police Recruits

Under the proposed legislation, in order to receive a permanent position as a law enforcement officer, probationary police officers must have a bachelor's degree with a major or a minor in social work.

Newly proposed legislation would change the education requirements for Illinois police officers Last month State Rep. Jaime Andrade Jr., D-Chicago, filed House Bill 3961.

Under this bill, in order to receive a permanent position as a law enforcement officer, probationary police officers must have a bachelor's degree with a major or a minor in social work.

This would only affect police officers whose employment begins after the law goes into effect, ABC reports.

HB3961 has been referred to the Rules Committee.
