Canadian Officer Ambushed and Killed During Training
The chase for the suspect ended about two hours after the first of two reported shootings when Ontario's police watchdog says officers fatally shot the man, who had been tracked down to a Hamilton cemetery.
A 22-year veteran of the Toronto Police Services was shot in what is described as an “ambush attack” while training in Mississauga. The suspect was later killed by law enforcement.
Chief James Ramer of Toronto Police Services identified Const. Andrew Hong, 48, as the officer who was shot and killed inside a plaza just after 2 p.m. on Monday, Mississagua.com reports.
“The details of his murder are subject of a Peel regional police investigation and I am working closely with (Peel police chief Nishan) Duraiappah to determine what exactly happened to our officer,” Ramer said during an evening news conference at the scene. “I can say that our preliminary information is that Constable Hong was shot at close range and died at the scene.”
While on lunch break during a joint training session, the officer was shot in what Duraiappah described as an unprovoked “ambush attack” that was part of a shooting spree.
Peel police are co-ordinating a multi-jurisdictional investigation into Hong's death as well as one other person who was killed and three others injured in a series of shootings Monday across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
The suspect fled the scene in a Jeep.
