CrimeReports allows law enforcement agencies to provide neighborhood crime information to citizens in near real-time and empowers citizen participation in community policing. The service is free to the public and allows citizens to receive alerts automatically via e-mail when crimes occur within a specified distance of their homes. It also allows citizens to view reported crime activity on an easy-to-use map for any location within city boundaries. Police departments also have the ability to limit the information disclosed and to provide customized information, such as final disposition of the event or a police narrative. A system geared toward providing agencies with crime maps for their own use is in the works.
