For years now, bad guys have been painting guns in neon colors to look like toys, while so-called "toys" have become so realistic that they're virtually indistinguishable from the real thing—especially in rapidly unfolding, high-stress situations.
“Preliminarily, the investigation suggests the weapon produced was a replica BB gun; however, further investigation is needed to confirm the capability of the suspected weapon,” the department states in a social media post.
Police said the man then pointed what was believed to be a handgun into the air before lowering it toward officers. Two officers fired their duty weapons and struck the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The police report lists the gun as a .44 Magnum. The image details that it was a replica Model 1858 New Army .44-caliber cap-and-ball revolver of the kind made by a number of Italian firms, chiefly for the collector market.
