According to the sheriff's office, Deputy Pat Barnes was responding to assist the Prentiss Police Department in a reported altercation at the Western Motel in Prentiss. On his way, Deputy Barnes lost control of his vehicle and collided with a tree.
The officer died at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt, troopers said.
According to Indiana State Police, Deputy James Driver was traveling south on North State Road 45 when a 2006 GMC truck and trailer driven by Christopher Derr, 22, of Monticello, Illinois, was traveling north and attempted to stop but lost control, hitting Driver’s police cruiser.
Trooper Todd Hanneken was westbound on Route 10 when his squad car left the road. His car hit a light pole and then a tree.
