A two-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 near North Platte was reported about 9:45 p.m. on Thanksgiving. When Trooper Alex Coffman arrived, he found two vehicles on their sides and partially submerged in the waters of Fremont Slough.

Nebraska Sheriff Loses Recall Election Over Lack of Certification
Sheriff C.J. Smith was elected in 2022, but was not a Nebraska certified law enforcement officer at the time. State law allows for a non-certified person to be elected sheriff, but requires that they receive training and earn certification.

Police say about 7 p.m. an adult male driver went around the barricades at the Halloween event and approached the officer, who then shot the driver.

Man Gets 96-Year Sentence for 2018 Shooting of Omaha Office
John Ezell Jr. shot and wounded Omaha Police Officer Ken Fortune during a September 2018 traffic stop and was himself shot by other officers returning fire, police records state. Initially charged with attempted murder, Ezell pled “no contest” in January to four felony counts, including assault and assault of a first-responder.

Nebraska Sheriff's K-9, Innocent Motorist, and Suspect Killed in Train Crash
The suspect who had stolen a sheriff's K-9 vehicle hit the back of a vehicle driven by a teacher who was waiting for the train come through, pushing the vehicle into the train. Stoltenberg, Ediger and the K-9 died on impact.

LB255, introduced by Lincoln Sen. Matt Hansen, would provide monetary compensation to the family of a law enforcement officer, firefighter or public EMS ambulance squad member killed in the line of duty, including those who work on a voluntary basis.

Omaha Officer Shot in Face Friday Now Recovering
Officer Jeffrey Wittstruck and Officer Joseph Kunza went to the JC Penney’s store in Westroads Mall for a man accused of shoplifting who was being detained by store security. A JC Penny’s loss prevention employee told officers Jenkins put a package of t-shirts in his backpack and left the store without paying.
