264 Line-of-Duty Deaths in 2020, Most from COVID
The Memorial Fund announced in its proprietary "2020 Law Enforcement Officers Fatalities Report" that 264 federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial officers died in the line of duty over the past year, representing a 96% increase over the 135 officers who died in the line of duty in 2019. In the category of “Other” causes, which includes 145 Confirmed Covid-19 deaths, the number of fatalities is up 300% over 2019.

Line-of-Duty Deaths Increased in 2021, FBI Reports
Officers killed while on duty increased drastically, by nearly 40%, in 2021. According to FBI statistics, 129 law enforcement officers were killed in line-of-duty incidents in 2021. Of these, 73 officers died as a result of felonious acts and 56 officers died in accidents.

AG Holder: 2011 Duty Deaths 'Simply Unacceptable'
Duty deaths have spiked in 2011 with a 20% increase through March 22 compared to 2010. So far in 2011, 49 officers have died in the line of duty, according to preliminary data from NLEOMF. The spike in duty deaths began in 2010 after a two-year decline. There were 162 LODDs, 45 more than 2009.

FBI: Felonious Deaths of Officers Spiked 61% in 2016
The FBI's annual Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted (LEOKA) report says 118 American law enforcement officers were killed in the line of duty in 2016, a 35% increase over 2015 when the FBI reported 86 line-of-duty deaths. Even more alarming, felonious deaths of officers spiked 61% from the 41 slain in 2015 to 66 in 2016.

Gunfire Duty Deaths Down 33% in 2017
NLEOMF announced today in its 2017 Preliminary Law Enforcement Fatalities Report that a total of 128 federal, state, local, tribal and territorial officers died in the line of duty over the past year, which is the lowest annual figure since 2013 when 117 officers died. A total of of 143 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in 2016. This year's 10% decrease reverses three consecutive years of increases in officer deaths.
